TE HUI AKO – A MEETING TO SHARE LEARNING

 Starting today we will be holding our Te Hui Ako, 13-15 August. Last term we achieved our highest ever participation with 94% of you meeting with our kaiako (teachers). It was a fantastic result and has set the bar even higher for this term. Scheduled times were sent out last week. Times have been allocated to those families who were unable to return a form. Our teachers are looking forward to sharing your child’s achievements so far this term. Ms McMurray is excited to see what we are capable of achieving this term. Go RPS!

FAMILY/WHĀNAU SURVEY

When you come along to your Te Hui Ako you will be invited to give us some quick feedback on the frequency of Te Hui Ako, school camps, bullying and whether your child has acess to a device at home. Your input informs our self review-review and, where necessary, refine how we do things here at RPS. Thank you for making the time to do this. If you come to the Library before or after your meeting to complete the survey you will go into a draw to win a $50 supermarket voucher or a $50 Toy World voucher either  The class that provides the most responses will also receive a special surprise.

YEAR 5/6 NETBALL TOURNAMENT

Last week two teams represented Randwick Park at the Manurewa Primary Schools Sports Association (MPSSA) netball tournament. Both teams played very well.  Our girls won 5 of their 6 games – narrowly losing to St Annes by 1 goal! Our boys team placed 2nd overall. Well done to all our players.

2024 PAPAKURA REP PRIZEGIVING 

HELP OUR SOUTH AUCKLAND INTERMEDIATE CHESS CHAMPIONS GET TO THE NATIONALS IN WELLINGTON!

Chess has taken off at our school as a club run during break times. After a year of growing the club and the skills of our students (thanks to our chess coach Ronald), we entered two teams in the Regional Interschool Competition. Our Primary team came third and our Intermediate team WON.

Five students now have the opportunity to compete in the National Competition in Wellington.

Funds raised will be used to cover flights, accommodation, and meals.

POHUTUKAWA TEAM MOTAT TRIP

On Tuesday 6th August, we went to MOTAT. We had to go on a bus to get there. It was a long time but we eventually got there. When we got there we had snacks and went on a tram ride. A tram was an olden-day bus that used tracks and electricity. After, we were allowed to look at things freely in our groups. We looked at tessellations, pumphouses, old phones, and old trams. We participated in a lesson, and the person who was teaching us was Ashley. She taught us about inventions and innovations. Once again, we got to look freely once more and found old and new tractors, houses, and scooters. At the end of the day, we headed back to school because our time was over. On the bus, I was quite sad we had to go but I can’t wait to go again.

CYBERSAFETY – PROTECTING OUR TAMARIKI ONLINE

As parents/whānau, we do everything we can to keep our tamariki safe and well, from getting them to wear sunscreen,  to being careful when crossing a road and wearing a helmet when riding a bike. 

Being online is no different, but the strategies to keep our tamariki safe are. How can we protect them from online bullies and from seeing inappropriate content online? 

Over the next newsletters we will revisit tips to ensure the online safety of our tamaiki.

1. Talk openly with your son/daughter about their online activity

As soon as your child starts accessing the internet, talk to them about what they are reading, watching and who they are communicating with online – and keep the conversation going as they grow older. Ask your child what sites they visit or apps they use, write a list and look at them together. Talk to your child about what you think is appropriate, and remind them that this may be different for other parents/whānau  and their tamariki. Your house, your rules. It is up to parents/whānau to set the rules and expectations.

Listen to your child and reach an agreement about what is right for your aiga. Remember the time will come when they will access the internet outside the safety of your home and you want them to be prepared for that.

It’s important  to teach them about their online reputation, too, and how they must be careful about how they behave, interact with people and represent themselves in such a public forum. They must always remember that the internet isn’t private and something that they write, share or post will permanently be there.

KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE 2024

During the week of the 2nd to the 6th of September RPS will be doing a Keeping Ourselves Safe unit. Teachers/kaiako and the School Community Officer will teach sessions in class.

Our junior classes (Year 1 to 4) will learn will include the topics My Body Is My Own, Unwanted Touch and Behavior, and How To Say “No” Confidently then move away and report what has happened. 

The Year 5 and 6 tamaiti will identify potentially unsafe situations in both the real world and the digital environment. What abuse is, including that it is wrong and should be reported, it is not their fault.

Our Year 7 and 8 student’s focus is on choosing appropriate options to keep themselves safe. Their main topic is ‘No Excuses for Abuse’ and includes why it is important to report abuse – who and how to tell.
