The 2024 theme for Tonga Language Week is ‘E tu’uloa ‘a e Lea faka-Tongá ‘o ka lea’aki ‘i ‘api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-‘a-kāingá – The Tongan Language will be sustainable when used at home, church and in the wider community. This theme derives from the overarching Language Week Series theme for 2024, ‘Sustainability’.

MĀORI BILINGUAL EXPRESSION OF INTEREST SURVEY

COUNTIES ZONE BOYS NETBALL
Our Year 8 Boys’ Netball Team played at the Counties Zone Finals last week. They were unbeaten in pool play defeating Manurewa Intermediate, Waimahia Intermediate and Rosehill Intermediate before winning their semifinal against Pukekohe Intermediate. They played a good game in the final, losing 12-8 to Clendon Park. They have qualified for the Auckland Championships in next week. Thank you to Tania Savali for umpiring over the course of the day. We also appreciated our whānau who came to support us!

DROPPING AND COLLECTING YOUR CHILDREN/TAMARIKI
When dropping your tamariki off in the morning please use our yellow coned drop-off area. This is for the safety of you and your tamariki. If you would like to walk your child/ren to class, please park on the road.
Our school gates are closed from 2 pm. Only parents/whānau who have a parking permit are permitted through our gates as we have limited parking spaces.

HELP OUR SOUTH AUCKLAND INTERMEDIATE CHESS CHAMPIONS GET TO THE NATIONALS IN WELLINGTON!
Chess has taken off at our school as a club run during break times. After a year of growing the club and the skills of our students (thanks to our chess coach Ronald), we entered two teams in the Regional Interschool Competition. Our Primary team came third and our Intermediate team WON.
Five students now have the opportunity to compete in the National Competition in Wellington.
Funds raised will be used to cover flights, accommodation, and meals.

CYBERSAFETY – PROTECTING OUR TAMARIKI ONLINE
As parents/whānau, we do everything we can to keep our tamariki safe.
Being online is no different, but the strategies to keep our tamariki safe are. How can we protect them from online bullies and from seeing inappropriate content online?
Over the next newsletters we will revisit tips to ensure the online safety of our tamaiki.
Keep screens and devices where you can see them
Always monitor your child’s time online, particularly younger children. Keep the computer/iPad/phone etc in a central spot in the home where it’s easy to keep an eye on what your child is doing and viewing online. For mobile devices, you can set them to forget Wi-Fi passcodes so your children can not go online without you knowing. You can also try to make an agreement that there are no tablets, phones, laptops or gaming in bedrooms.
You might also consider checking browser histories after your child has been online to see what sites they are visiting. This approach obviously gets harder as children grow older and work out how to clear histories – which is more reason to open the lines of communication about internet use at an early age

KEEPING OURSELVES SAFE 2024
During the week of the 2nd to the 6th of September RPS will be doing a Keeping Ourselves Safe unit. Teachers/kaiako and the School Community Officer will teach sessions in class.
Our junior classes (Year 1 to 4) topics will include My Body Is My Own, Unwanted Touch and Behavior, and How To Say “No” Confidently then move away and report what has happened.
The Year 5 and 6 tamaiti will identify potentially unsafe situations in both the real world and the digital environment. What abuse is, including that it is wrong and should be reported, it is not their fault.
Our Year 7 and 8 student’s focus is on choosing appropriate options to keep themselves safe. Their main topic is ‘No Excuses for Abuse’ and includes why it is important to report abuse – who and how to tell.

LABELLING CLOTHING ITEMS
We regularly have quite an amount of lost clothing. As you are aware school uniform items are expensive. To assist us in ensuring that we can return any lost items to their owner, please clearly label all uniform items.

SCHOOL HOURS
School starts at 8:40 am & finishes at 2:45 pm. If tamariki arrive after 8:40 am they are late and need to sign in at the back of our office with Miss Dot, our School Liaison Officer.
All students are asked to be off-site/off-school grounds by 3 pm unless they are attending training for a sport.
This is for safety reasons as we do not have supervision in case of an emergency, injury or incident.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
With winter is upon us, we ask that students wear our winter uniform. It consists of our school pants, polo fleece, socks or stockings and school shoes (School shoes -black, white, or navy blue, or sports shoes (black, white, or navy blue).
If your child is wearing a piece of jewellery as part of their culture, please advise either their class teacher or our school office. Jewellery, nail polish, and jandals do not form part of our RPS uniform.
