HELP OUR SOUTH AUCKLAND INTERMEDIATE CHESS CHAMPIONS GET TO THE NATIONALS IN WELLINGTON!

Chess has taken off at our school as a club run during break times. After a year of growing the club and the skills of our students (thanks to our chess coach Ronald), we entered two teams in the Regional Interschool Competition. Our Primary team came third and our Intermediate team WON.

Five students now have the opportunity to compete in the National Competition in Wellington.

Funds raised will be used to cover flights, accommodation, and meals.

KA PAI PIES FUNDRAISER FOR AIMS & SPORTS CAMP

Thank you to our Randwick Park community, staff, students, and whānau for supporting our Ka Pai Pie Fundraiser for our AIMS and Sports Camp tamariki.

We sold over $10,000 worth of pies and raised just over $3,000 for our AIMS and Sports Camp teams.

POHUTUKAWA TEAM
AUT MILLENNIUM TRIP – Written by Ngamata Tetevano, Room 10

When we got to the AUT millennium the first thing we did was kayaking. We did a drill where we had to rock the kayak and flip it over and the instructor of the kayaking said if we didn’t do the drill properly then we couldn’t use the kayak. Luckily everyone did the drill correctly and we all had so much fun. Everyone felt so relaxed and it kind of felt like bumper cars because we all crashed into each other and I fell in the pool 3 times.

After team building, our next activity was rock climbing. One of the walls was curved, I was so scared when I tried to climb it. As I was coming down the wall, I didn’t trust the belayer because I thought they would let it go and I would break my legs, but I managed to climb down.

I overcame my fear of heights by taking part in the activity and trying not to be nervous as well as climbing the hardest wall and trying not to back out of the challenge.  It was a great experience.

TE HUI AKO – A MEETING TO SHARE LEARNING

Coming up this term 13-15 August we will be holding our Te Hui Ako. Last term we achieved our highest ever participation result with 94% of you meeting with our kaiako (teachers). It was a fantastic result and has set the bar even higher for this term. Scheduling times will be sent out this week. Our teachers are looking forward to sharing your child’s achievements so far this term.

FILM SHOWCASE – SALA’A  LOLOGA, ROOM 23

Sala’a Lologa from Room 23 entered a Pacific Writing Competition about his culture and family. The name of the story that Sala’a made was “The Setema Gold Treasure”, which was about the gold that was lost long ago at sea.

He worked collaboratively with other people to narrate his and their stories. His story was animated and turned into a 75 minute film and screened in theatres.

During the holidays Sala’a and his classmates got the opportunity to watch his movie. They learned about island culture. At the end of the movie, they showed interviews of the writers on how they made it. When the movie was over, they gave each viewer a survey to fill in. The survey asked whether the viewer would like to enter the contest in the future and if they liked the movie. The students have been inspired to enter into the contest this year

It was a great movie and we all enjoyed it very much. We thank everyone who helped us with this awesome ‘treat’ during the school holidays.
