RPS Values and Dispositions

Responsible and Resilient

A responsible learner is ready for learning, focused and committed to their learning. They are well prepared for the school day, manage their emotions and behaviour, and can be relied upon to carry out all tasks to the best of their ability. They demonstrate integrity- doing the right thing, at the right time because it is the right thing to do.

Resilient

Being a resilient learner, means you understand you need to have grit and determination to learn and grow. You know that not everything will be easy and you will have some challenges, but how you deal with these challenges will determine if you learn and grow. Teaching students to see mistakes as part of the learning process helps them to develop a growth mindset and see they have the ability to learn and progress in all areas of school life.

EASTER HOT CROSS
BUN RECIPE

Ingredients:
4 cups (500 grams) plain flour
½ teaspoon (2 grams) salt
2 teaspoons (9 grams) mixed spice
¼ cup (50 grams) caster sugar
50 grams of butter, cut into cubes
1 cup sultanas
3 teaspoons (10 grams) dried yeast
1 cup milk (200 ml)
2 eggs
GLAZE AND CROSSES: 3 tablespoons flour, golden syrup for brushing

Equipment:
Mixing bowl              Metal butter knives
Board                        Baking trays
Ziplock bags            Baking paper
Measuring cups       Forks
Measuring spoon    Pastry brush
Jugs                         Oven mitts

Method:
1. Heat oven to 200°C
2. Tip the flour into a bowl and stir in salt, mixed spice and sugar.
3. Rub in butter with fingertips until it resembles bread crumbs.
4. Stir in dried fruit and yeast.
5. Fill a jug with milk and warm till hot. Crack eggs into the milk and whisk rapidly.
6. Pour egg-milk mixture into the flour and using a butter knife, mix the ingredients to a moist dough.
7. Divide the dough and then shape the dough into buns on a lightly floured surface. Buns are slightly larger than a golf ball.
8. Space side by side on a baking tray and cover loosely with cling film or a clean, dry towel. If time permits leave in a warm place until double in size.
9. Mix the 3 tablespoons of flour with 2 tablespoons of water to make a paste. Pour paste into a ziplock bag and make a nick in one of the corners. Pipe crosses on top of each bun.
10. Bake for 12 minutes or until risen and golden.
11. Brush with maple or golden syrup.
12. Serve as is or toast and serve with butter.

RPNC COLLEGIATE GRADING DAY

After a busy few weeks our young collegiate side “RP Mana Moana” managed to navigate
through a difficult day, remaining undefeated to take out Section 1 for the collegiate grade.
Thus successfully securing their team a coveted spot in the Collegiate Prem grade for the 2024 season!

With several regular players out due to their involvement in either polyfest or other sporting
commitments, the depleted team banded together showing enough resilience to clinch the
crucial wins. Thank you to Salina (RP Tumalosi) and Tuilosa (RP Ururoa) Kitana
(Livewire….and hopefully a few more throughout the season!!), for filling in today. Thanks also to our umpire for the day Sina “flash shoes” Lologa for burning up the courtside with herwhistle! Finally to our small but dedicated family support crew for helping out where needed.

#TeamSpirit #Victory #RPManaMoana

That’s 3 teams with 3 excellent outcomes from grading! No pressure RP Tumālosi (Senior team) Looking forward to April 6 to see our final team grade!

YEAR 7/8 TAG TOURNAMENT

Last week our Boys’ and Girls’ Tag teams competed in the Counties Zone finals. Both
teams acquitted themselves well in a long day of games, with our Girls’ team placing third
and the Boys’ team fourth overall. Thanks to Mrs Savali for her coaching as well as Whaea
Tiriana and Whaea Lin for helping out on the day. Thank you also to all the whānau who came and supported us.

The University of Auckland Optometry Clinic

Lisa Silva runs the vision screening program at the University of Auckland Optometry Clinic.
The clinic offers a vision screening service where they come to the school with a team of

optometry students and assess the kids for vision problems.
The screening will take place on Wednesday 10 April in the school hall.

The ideal scenario is that students who fail the screening would be seen on the vision bus for a full eye test and glasses if required.

The full eye test and glasses are fully funded. There is no cost to the family.

EYE ON NATURE AT THE BOTANIC GARDEN

30 Year 5 and 6 students had the opportunity to attend the Eye on Nature learning experience at the Botanic Gardens. They caught insects to identify; found solutions for flooding stormwater drains and brought back native saplings which have been planted within the school grounds.

READING EGGS
Exciting news! If your child is in Year 1 or 2 they will now also have access to Maths Seeds using their Reading Eggs password.  See your child’s teacher if they have forgotten their password to log into Reading Eggs at home.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
What can I do to make sure my child is going to school?

To make attending RPS a priority, there are things you can do at home, and things you can work alongside our school on:

  • talk to your children/tamariki about why it is important to go to school every day – ask them what they want to be in the future. Their education is the key to doing well in life
  • be positive about coming to school
  • set good habits about going to school from day one
  • prepare your children the night before school – have they done their homework, do they need to take anything along tomorrow?
  • have a consistent good morning routine, so it’s not too rushed and they have time to get everything they need
  • don’t let them have the day off just because they would rather be at home
  • don’t keep them at home when you know that they are just nervous about school – talk to your child and talk to their kaiako/teacher about how they are feeling
  •  check in regularly with your child, listen to what they are telling you or not telling you – this may make it easier to pick up on any worries they have
  • keep family/whānau holidays outside of term time, every day at school is an opportunity to build their knowledge and skills, and repetition is critical for learning – especially for primary school children
  • don’t overload them – school may be exhausting for some children so make sure they have some downtime after school to relax and have a break.

Thank you for your support with attendance.

CHANGE OF CLOTHING FOR OUR JUNIOR TAMARIKI
If your child is in Year 0-4, please pack them a change of clothing. This is incase of accidents which can occur at their age.

MANGAHIGH ONLINE MATH

TUTORING

All of our learners in Years 3-8 have been
given a paid subscription to MangaHigh an
online Maths tutoring programme. Each week teachers assign students tasks to complete
that build on their maths learning in class.
Tamariki are also able to complete a range of self selected tasks to build their strategies, knowledge and understanding in maths. Students who regularly completed tasks for atleast 30 minutes three times a week had significantly higher results at school. Where possible, please support your child to spend time whizzing up the levels on Mangahigh at home! Mangahigh can be accessed on any digital device (chromebook, laptop, iPad, phone)

Log on here: https://www.mangahigh.com/en/
